Activist Filmmaker Awarded CMG Fellowship with 350.org

Congratulations to Aleksei Wagner, our newest CMG Fellow! Aleksei begins his CMG Fellowship today with 350.org in Brooklyn, New York. This 8-month CMG Fellowship provides for a $40,000 fellowship stipend, in addition to in-kind support from 350.org and Conservation Media Group. Aleksei brings with him an impressive history of using video for activism including experience with organizing, training, editing, producing and directing. He was also on the staff at the Global Action Project for 8 years, where he facilitated media analysis and film production workshops with youth organizing groups throughout NYC to produce films that advance their social justice campaigns.

Aleksei will be working full-time over the next eight months with 350.org's North American Campaign Manager, Sabelo Narasimhan, to develop & improve strategies for integrating video into 350.org's organizing and actions. The primary obective of the CMG Fellowship is to assess and develop long-term strategies for increasing 350.org’s capacity for using video to create measurable impact, in the US and globally. Aleksei will also produce short web videos in support of 350.org’s US campaigns, including the upcoming People’s Climate Mobilization in April 2017. In addition to strategy development and video production, Aleksei will also be calling on his experience with the Global Action Project to develop potential video and media trainings for the US digital and communications teams at 350.org.

The worldwide staff and voluteers at 350.org are building a global climate movement. Their online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are coordinated by a global network active in over 188 countries. They believe that "a global grassroots movement can hold our leaders accountable to the realities of science and the principles of justice. That movement is rising from the bottom up all over the world, and is uniting to create the solutions that will ensure a better future for all." The number "350" refers to their mission to achieve climate safety: "to preserve a livable planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 400 parts per million to below 350 ppm."

Aleksei Wagner is our third CMG Fellow since our founding in 2014. Previous CMG Fellowships included: CMG Fellow Ayla Fox whom we partnered with Sailors for the Sea; and CMG Fellow Wilder Nicholson whom we partnered with the Hurricane Island Foundation. Through our CMG Fellowship program, we place talented individuals within host organizations who are working in either ocean health or climate & energy issues. CMG Fellows are funded by CMG with host organizations contributing a combination of matching funds, in kind support and staff time. In addition to allowing video activists to pursue their creative conservation work within an existing organization, the CMG Fellowship Program also increases the capacity of host organizations to communicate their message and to measure impact.
