Faith-Based Solar Campaign Underway

Michelle Benham received one of our Action Grants this fall and is putting it to work in North Carolina with her Faith in Solar campaign. CMG awarded Michelle an $8,000 grant at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival after hearing her pitch for her project that will be used to mobilize faith-based communities in a fight against Duke Energy. The company is attempting to suppress access to individual solar production.

The Faith in Solar campaign will target state Attorney General Roy Cooper, urging him to use his authority to enforce Duke Energy’s corporate charter. The goal of the campaign is to set a precedent for large, politically influential utility companies around the country for providing clean, renewable alternatives to energy production.

According to Michelle, the project will serve to "[amplify] the voices of leaders within faith communities in North Carolina like Reverend Nelson Johnson at Beloved Community Center and their partnership with NC WARN. By outlining why they brought this test case forward and by urging Attorney General Roy Cooper to open an investigation into Duke Energy, this video will engage people throughout the state in a conversation about the importance of clean, renewable energy and the implications it has for the climate crisis at a local level."

CMG's Director Liz Smith adds, "Our interest in this project is two-fold; engaging all citizens, including faith-based communities, is essential to converting our energy system to renewables and we support the way Faith in Solar is doing just that through video. Second, we love the combination of passion and experience that Michelle is bringing to the project and the sustainable community."

CMG's Action Grants provide up to $10,000 to organizations and individuals to catalyze a project or campaign that uses video to create measurable action in ocean conservation or sustainable energy. We have awarded multiple Action Grants in 2015 through our Catalyst Workshops Capstone continuation fund and through partnerships with additional video engagement organizations, such as the Points North Engagement Summit at the Camden International Film Festival, and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.
