CMG Action Grant Awarded to Hurricane Island Foundation

The Hurricane Island Foundation is the most recent recipient of our Action Grant to support their new "Off-shore, Off-line, Off-the-grid" campaign. We will be providing a matching grant of $9,500 to the foundation for the production, post-production, and distribution of a series of short videos, as well as measurement of the campaign's impact; the campaign will launch in late 2015.

We connected with Sam Hallowell, Director of the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership and of Hurricane Island Foundation, as a participant at our 2015 Energy Catalyst Workshop this past summer. At the workshop, Sam worked together with fellow attendees Rita Liao and Jay Sia, both filmmakers, on a video campaign concept to communicate the exciting educational opportunities that Hurricane Island has to offer. They developed an exciting and engaging video concept which, after Sam returned home and shared it with his board, the Hurricane Island Foundation decided would be worthwhile to develop into a full-fledged campaign.

According to Sam, the workshop experience encouraged him to pursue using media to promote the foundation's mission: “The CMG Catalyst Workshop was an amazing opportunity to learn from and collaborate with media and communication professionals in an intensive, group-work environment. The workshop helped my organization look at the role of media not only as a way of informing people about what we do, but as a tool for action and change. The focus and information that I gained on the strategy, distribution and measurement behind media, rather than just the product alone, has been instrumental in the way we will use video as a tool to help meet our goals and advance our organization in the future."

The CMG Action Grant will not only allow Sam to continue building on the knowledge he gained at our workshop, but will also reunite him with his workshop team! The Hurricane Island Foundation has chosen to use the grant money to hire Rita and Jay, Sam's workshop catalyst project teammates, to reunite and complete the project that they began together.

The goal and philosophy of the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is to excite, educate and train people of all ages to be informed, passionate leaders for the environment so that they can help become part of the solution to address the global environmental challenges that we currently are facing. They offer vital place-based and experiential science, sustainability and leadership education. According to Sam, “These videos will be an incredible tool for communicating who we are and will excite and inspire our target audiences.”

CMG's Action Grants provide up to $10,000 to organizations & individuals to catalyze a project or campaign that uses video to create measurable action in ocean conservation or sustainable energy. We will be awarding up to five Action Grants in 2015 through our Catalyst Workshops Capstone continuation fund and through partnerships with additional video engagement organizations, such as the Points North Engagement Summit at the Camden International Film Festival, and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.
