Bury or Stop Northern Pass

Dear Governor Hassan,

We applaud your efforts to date to defend New Hampshire's natural and cultural heritage from the proposed Northern Pass transmission line. Please join us in making sure that our children and grandchildren can pass this vital heritage on to their children and grandchildren. Please ask Northeast Utilities and Hydro-Québec either to bury the entire project in New Hampshire or stop it altogether.

Everywhere we look we see proposals for new high-voltage, direct current transmission lines.  In Maine, Vermont, and New York, new north-south high-voltage direct-current lines are being proposed completely underground or underwater; even Hydro-Québec itself is advancing an underground transmission project to connect with New York. Everywhere we look we see new, innovative underground transmission technology proposals.  Everywhere except New Hampshire.

Governor Hassan, before you host the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers here in New Hampshire this July, please make it clear that New Hampshire welcomes each of them to our magnificent state. But please also convey the message that we will insist on smart, well-planned energy projects that advance a clean energy future and we will not welcome any overhead extension cords like Northern Pass that provide little benefit to the state, at the expense of our natural and scenic resources.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

I love the scenic beauty of NH and spend hours hiking there every year when I am home. Power lines would definitely ruin the beauty for me. Please insist that they be buried.

My kids go to camp in New Hampshire. I go on vacation in New Hampshire. It is so close to home in Greenwich CT, yet like another world. Let's keep it that way!!

NH mountains are special and unique. Northern Pass power lines should not be allowed to spoil this treasure. Use the money to develop better conservation of power.

If the electricity is so important, than bury the lines. Do not deface the shrinking beauty of NH by adding these colossal electric carrying towers.
  • Scott Davisabout 12 years ago Holderness NH
If I cut down a tree in the National Forest I would be arrested but we are going to let a foreign company cut down thousands of trees to pass unneeded power through N.H. for other states? Let get off foreign oil and stay off foreign electricity!
  • Meg Morrowabout 12 years ago Silver Spring MD
I grew up in NH. It breaks my heart to see what might happen with the installation of these power lines. I don't live in NH now but NH is my heritage. Iti is my kids' heritage. Please bury the lines or stop the project.

Nothing ruins a long beautiful hike like getting above tree line and seeing the manmade scars along the mountains.

Please don't be the one to go down in history as the destroyer of NH's natural beauty.

There's a mystical character to NH. People see the state as a symbol of freedom and beauty. We would be politically weak to allow the towers when states around us are burying. We would be foolish to let these towers mar the state's unique visual beauty.

I have lived in NH my entire life. I love NH and all that it encompasses. I don't want our forests scared.
  • Mary Simardabout 12 years ago Bristol NH
This is coming because, unlike Vermont, New York, and Maine, we have no laws which will protect our state's natural beauty. It does not benefit us nor our state.
  • James Whithedabout 12 years ago Lancaster NH
Don't trash our scenic views for power that goes MA, CT & RI.
  • Brent Johnstoneabout 12 years ago Lincoln NH
What a shame it would be to scar the beauty of New Hampshire. We ski, hike and camp throughout New Hampshire and it would be a huge blow to all who appreciate the state's beauty.

it's taking away our forests by putting more ugly bad for our/ all animals included health.

This is one of the most beautiful areas of the northeast. It is too special to deface and degrade with power lines.
  • Carol Huberabout 12 years ago Bristol NH
We should not be destroying the scenic value of NH

Lets not scar our White Mountains. Please bury the lines .

Once the landscape has been denigrated by these power lines there will be no turning back. These lands must be left unmarred and wildlife, especially birds, must be protected from the detrimental effects of these power lines. KILL this project please!

Save the integrity of the forests. Put solar on buildings and homes instead. Cheaper and less destructive.
  • Henry Blagden Jrabout 12 years ago Short Hills NJ
Sadly, the mountains that I have loved visiting over the last 65 years are threatened. The greater public good to residents/ visitors would be sacrificed to narrow commercial interest. Bury it or stop it, I implore you!
