Bury or Stop Northern Pass

Dear Governor Hassan,

We applaud your efforts to date to defend New Hampshire's natural and cultural heritage from the proposed Northern Pass transmission line. Please join us in making sure that our children and grandchildren can pass this vital heritage on to their children and grandchildren. Please ask Northeast Utilities and Hydro-Québec either to bury the entire project in New Hampshire or stop it altogether.

Everywhere we look we see proposals for new high-voltage, direct current transmission lines.  In Maine, Vermont, and New York, new north-south high-voltage direct-current lines are being proposed completely underground or underwater; even Hydro-Québec itself is advancing an underground transmission project to connect with New York. Everywhere we look we see new, innovative underground transmission technology proposals.  Everywhere except New Hampshire.

Governor Hassan, before you host the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers here in New Hampshire this July, please make it clear that New Hampshire welcomes each of them to our magnificent state. But please also convey the message that we will insist on smart, well-planned energy projects that advance a clean energy future and we will not welcome any overhead extension cords like Northern Pass that provide little benefit to the state, at the expense of our natural and scenic resources.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

  • Randy Kwistabout 12 years ago Gilford NH
Tourism is critical to NH. Power lines detract from our legacy of wilderness and natural beauty.
  • Thomas Royabout 12 years ago Canterbury NH
Burying power lines is essential to insure a "scenic New Hampshire" and to protect our essential power transmission system from severe storm impacts. Other states are burying power lines and so should New Hampshire.
  • Charles Doreabout 12 years ago Concord NH
All NH will get out of this is those huge ugly towers that will bring down our property values and destroy our beautiful landscape.
  • William Campbellabout 12 years ago Exeter NH
    1) It will seriously compromise many unspoiled natural areas; 2) NE Utilities has not been quite straight with the people, on the benefits to NH.
  • Michael Meeksabout 12 years ago Cornish NH
Burying the transmiasion lines is somewhat acceptable. No Northern Pass is ideal. Please don't destroy New Hampshire's natural resources and scenic landscape!
  • Ronald Reedabout 12 years ago Boscawen NH
The beauty of our state is at risk. Burying the lines is the best direction or we don't want it otherwise!

21st century challenges require 21st century solutions where public benefit is on equal footing with corporate profits.

Preserving NH's Natural resources is of utmost importance. Keep Natural areas free of harmful towers.

Safeguard the beautiful wilderness of the North Country from this destructive project motivated only by greed and which disregards the concerns and values of the people of Northern NH.
  • Richard Nelsonabout 12 years ago Derry NH
I soundly support all the positive reasons my fellow NH citizens have stated why we should not allow greed to destroy any more of our great state. Over building has already destroyed too much. Make the Billionaires bury it or forget it.
  • Erika Towleabout 12 years ago Concord NH
Either way bury this project underground or forget about the project
  • Jean Dobbinsabout 12 years ago Gilford NH
I love NH. I believe the Northern Pass would destroy a large section of our state, negatively impact tourism (our economy), and negatively impact thousands of homeowners. It is all about corporate greed and deception, and is bad for NH.
  • Danielle Downingabout 12 years ago Seabrook MD
I now live in MD but NH is still home. Our state has a unique beauty that has value of itself, is a significant source of income--and is under threat. Gov. Hassan must protect NH for those of us who live or visit there now, and for the generations to come.
  • Marcia Kiley-LeMayabout 12 years ago Alton NH
Don't let Northern Pass destroy the beauty of our state. Don't let money win over the will of the residents of our wonderful state! Thank you.

The Integrity of the economy for NH, largely based upon the scenic beauty and the tourism that it attracts as a result, will be forever damaged if the Northern Pass Towers mar our landscape.

  • Brenda Erlerabout 12 years ago New Hampton NH
Please protect the views that make New Hampshire such a beautiful state and that attract the tourists we depend on.
  • Gerry Goldabout 12 years ago New London NH
Don't scar New Hampshire's beauty when there's no need to so. Hydro Quebec can bury lines for all time but could never repay NH for the loss of our world class landscape.

I am still concerned about the appearance of a treeless swath. There is still concern about the impact on a sensitive, scenic area.
