Bury or Stop Northern Pass

Dear Governor Hassan,

We applaud your efforts to date to defend New Hampshire's natural and cultural heritage from the proposed Northern Pass transmission line. Please join us in making sure that our children and grandchildren can pass this vital heritage on to their children and grandchildren. Please ask Northeast Utilities and Hydro-Québec either to bury the entire project in New Hampshire or stop it altogether.

Everywhere we look we see proposals for new high-voltage, direct current transmission lines.  In Maine, Vermont, and New York, new north-south high-voltage direct-current lines are being proposed completely underground or underwater; even Hydro-Québec itself is advancing an underground transmission project to connect with New York. Everywhere we look we see new, innovative underground transmission technology proposals.  Everywhere except New Hampshire.

Governor Hassan, before you host the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers here in New Hampshire this July, please make it clear that New Hampshire welcomes each of them to our magnificent state. But please also convey the message that we will insist on smart, well-planned energy projects that advance a clean energy future and we will not welcome any overhead extension cords like Northern Pass that provide little benefit to the state, at the expense of our natural and scenic resources.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

  • Dennis Shanoffabout 12 years ago Gilsum NH
to preserve the natural beauty of our state as well as concerned about the impact to wildlife. Don't want it even if buried.
  • Howie Wemyssabout 12 years ago Randolph NH
The scenic beauty of Northern NH is one of the last things we have to insure economic prosperity for residents. Tourism must be protected. Bury Northern Pass or do away with it entirely!
  • Nancy Penneyabout 12 years ago Randolph NH
We must preserve the beauty that we have that is not already interrupted by unnatural sources.

To preserve the amazing landscape of the white mountains for generations of visitors and residents.

As an avid outdoors-woman, preservation of the natural resources in NH are critical to me. As a business owner, it is critical to make sound economic decisions. Northern Pass is NOT the right decision for this state- economically or environmentally.

NP will damage our wilderness and our economy, for nothing but private profit- - we don't need it, and we don't want it!!
  • Ellyn Tigheabout 12 years ago Campton NH
NP is not going to be just a visual scar but a project to set precedence for future such energy projects around New England. Do it right and set a gold standard.

It is important to save this natural beauty and it's wildlife. Do not allow NH to look like Quebeque with its massive power lines obliterating the landscape.

This is important to me because the Mountains give me peace in such a hectic life. I love the peace and quiet of the mountains and the fact that nobody can reach me while I hike. We all need to be unconnected for a little bit. I love pure nature.

I want to prevent our beautiful National Forest from being permanently scared with electric transmission lines and towers. And outside the National Forest, just the near proximity of unsightly towering power lines will devistate property values.

Corporate profits shouldn't trump the natural beauty of NH. The entities who stand to gain the most from this project are north of our border in Canada, and south of our border in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
  • Cliff Lo Vermeabout 12 years ago Merrimack NH
I love the white mountains and the National Forest and would hate to see it scared by the erection of thousands of electrical towers. I do not believe the benefits of the Northern Pass outweigh the damage that would be done.
