A Triple Win

The BLUE Ocean Film Festival brings together filmmakers and ocean conservation groups in a week-long event to inspire greater action for the ocean. It is jam packed with events; films, seminars, meet-and-greets, and panel discussions.   At the end of the week at the BLUE Ocean Film Festival, the Conservation Media Group (CMG) hosted a panel on the topic of “pairing emerging filmmakers with ocean conservation organizations” to create media for a cause, all under the direction of experienced professionals.  An all-star list of speakers from the international ocean conservation community were on the panel:

Alison Barrat - Director of Communications, Khalit bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation
Deb Castellana - Director of Communications, Mission Blue/Sylvia Earle Alliance
David E. Guggenheim - President, Ocean Doctor
Gianna Savoie - Award-winning documentary producer, Professor Montana State University
David Conover - Founder of Conservation Media Group

Many emerging and talented ocean filmmakers were in attendance.  The panel covered lots of concrete opportunities for these filmmakers to put their passions and skills to good use.  David Guggenheim and Gianna Savoie discussed ways filmmakers could approach conservation organizations to create opportunities for collaboration. David Conover discussed the CMG one-week workshops, to be held in the summer of 2015.  These are actually structured paired relationships, set-up to give a filmmaker an entree to ocean conservation that they might not otherwise be able to secure.  And the ocean conservation organizations will be able to boost their campaign with high quality videos.

The response at BLUE was positive. After the panel one film student, filled with enthusiasm, said it best, “Its a win-win-win,” he said, “A win for the filmmaker, a win for the conservation organization, and a win for the environment!”  Dr. Cecile Gaspar, who came from French Polynesia on behalf of the conservation group “Te mana o te Moana” attended the panel and signed up as a CMG partner right after the panel.  What emerging talent may soon be working with her?
