First CMG Fellow begins post at Sailors for the Sea

At our 2015 summer Catalyst Workshops we connected with a great group of organizations, activists and filmmakers — and since the workshops, we've been diligently working on how to continue those relationships. Our most recent news is that we've helped to place workshop Rhode Island filmmaker, Ayla Fox, in a fellowship position with at Sailors for the Sea and ocean conservation non-profit focused on the boating community. Both Ayla, and Sailors for the Sea's Social Impact Director, Hilary Kotoun, attended our Ocean's Catalyst Workshop and had the opportunity to work together. While collaborating with their workshop team, they developed a great video concept that Sailors for the Sea was excited about bringing to their organization and so, after the workshops ended, we went to work to see how we could help facilitate a fellowship.

Ayla will bring her experience as a filmmaker, as well as the insight and tools she gained from CMG's workshop, to help develop communication and engagement for their No Trash, No Trail, No Trace (NT3) Campaign. According to Sailor's for the Sea's Hilary Kotoun, "Ayla will help Sailors for the Sea better achieve our mission by enabling our organization to utilize video in a strategic manner that will reach a broader audience and engage them on the importance of ocean conservation. We are thrilled to work with Conservation Media Group and the opportunity to grow our digital media work would not be possible without their support."

Ayla is very excited about having the opportunity to work as part of Sailors for the Sea's team: "As a media maker, I eagerly embrace the opportunities— and challenges— of bringing the intangible into their physical existences. Often times, when working with a client, my services are brought in for a specific task, on a specific project, within a specific part of the organization, —rarely getting to see and understand how the whole system operates. Working with Sailors for the Sea will be different. For the next six months, I will embed myself and become part of their team. This full-submersion approach to a project will be a first, and I’m confident it will allow both parties to delve deeper into the fellowship’s goals compared to the regular client—contractor relationship.  I think it sets the stage to create tighter, more effective deliverables that in the end, produce measurable results."

CMG will fund Ayla's fellowship for 18 weeks during which she will develop strategy, creative direction, and produce 3–6 videos for Sailor for the Sea's NT3 project.

Through CMG's fellowships, we pair exceptional makers & sharers in paid fellowships with established conservation organizations. Those organizations focus on solving the challenges we face in taking care of our oceans and in sustainably powering the world. CMG Fellows are selected from our yearly group of workshop participants, and fellowships typically run for 9–12 months starting in September, but may vary.

In addition to allowing video activists to vigorously pursue their creative conservation work, the CMG Fellowship Program will also greatly increase the capacity of host organizations to communicate their message and to measure conservation impact.
